The Inspiration: From Tiffin Troubles to Tiffin Triumph

The idea for KATAK BATAK took root during a challenging time in my life. In 2020, while preparing for my Pharmacy Evaluation Board of Canada (PEBC) examinations amidst the pressures of work and study, I found myself struggling to find time for cooking. After trying over 15 different tiffin services, I realized that none could match the authentic, homemade Kathiyawadi flavors I grew up with. I often wished that my parents were here to cook for me and share the true taste of Kathiyawad with others. This longing, combined with the rising mortgage rates in 2022, sparked an idea—why not create a business that could deliver the authentic flavors of Kathiyawad to those like me, who craved the comfort of home-cooked food?

The Challenges: Turning a Dream into Reality

Starting KATAK BATAK wasn’t easy. In the beginning, people loved the taste of my food, but without a business license or a physical location, getting orders was tough. Events and festivals seemed out of reach, as high rent and lack of large-scale experience made it difficult to compete with established restaurants. But I didn’t give up. I began approaching event organizers directly, meeting with student associations, and giving food trials to anyone who would listen. Despite many rejections and financial setbacks, I finally got a break—a chance to be a vendor at a Toronto Metropolitan University event. With the support of friends and family, I pulled off my first major event, serving 300 people, and it was a resounding success.

The Breakthrough: Bringing the Family into the Business

The real breakthrough came in December 2023, when my family joined me in Canada. Together, we started offering tiffin services in January, and by March, we were serving 28 tiffins a day. Today, we proudly serve over 35 tiffins daily across the GTA. With my parents as the chefs—each with over 40 years of experience in cooking Kathiyawadi food—we were finally able to deliver on our promise of providing authentic, fresh, homemade meals to our customers.

Our Philosophy: Quality, Tradition, and Affordability

At KATAK BATAK, we don’t cut corners. We never use frozen ingredients or pre-made pastes; every spice is shipped from India, and every dish is handmade with care. Our food is prepared within 10 hours of delivery, ensuring that it’s always fresh and full of flavor. Our prices are affordable because we believe that everyone deserves access to high-quality, homemade food.

Our Vision: Growing Together, One Meal at a Time

Our goal is to expand our reach, offering catering services for private events and eventually opening a small-scale store where customers can dine in or take out. But no matter how much we grow, one thing will never change: our commitment to serving fresh, homemade food that feels like a taste of home.
